Started at the end of the 2005 Colorado Dark Arts Festival, Plasmacrash was formed by college radio DJ's Asbestos (then simply known as Big Tim) and Rivet, with the intention of performing at the 2006 Dark Arts Festival. After playing at a couple of parties, Rivet's then roommate and ex-Noncompliant guitarist Jonathan Robertson volunteered to play live drums for the band on account of his disdain for fake drums, as well as desire to be a drummer in a band. Plasmacrash was not selected to play Dark Arts 2006 (although Asbestos was selected to DJ), and the festival was slated to be discontinued thereafter, but the band refused to be defeated and continued their purveyance of high quality music.
In June of 2006, shortly after the Dark Arts Festival, Jon decided industrial wasn't for him and left the band. Near the end of 2006, Skottie Kuhl was added to the Plasmacrash roster after providing guest vocals at a show. Due to personal reasons, he had to leave before ever actually performing another show with the band, however his vocals can be heard on older recorded versions of "Caprice" and "Konsumkultur".
In 2007 Rivet was activated to go overseas with the Army National Guard. The band recruited guitarist Doc Grey, who had played with Asbestos in a previous band, as a fill in guitarist for Rivet while he was deployed. After a few bad shows, Doc was relieved from his position and was replaced with Chaotic Weevil, who had played guitar in a band called Winterwulff and the Sexual Harassment Pandas with Rivet and former Plasmacrash drummer Jon, as well as at the time Thick Noose. This transitional period saw the band taking a break from playing live shows.
During the hiatus, Asbestos pursued his side project Tantalus Doctrine, with ex New Waveforms and current Wiretrap keyboardist Pseudokiss Masochist. Rivet, meanwhile, continued developing his guitar technique and working on Plasmacrash material over the course of his deployment, and played in a cover band called Testocalypse with some people from his platoon.
As the band was preparing for its return to playing live shows, Asbestos recruited two new members: drummer Joey Gunn and bassist Kevin Lawless. Gunn managed to land the band a slot performing at the 2008 Anime Wasabi convention in Denver. The band opened for Japanese Industrial act The Royal Dead. While being one of the largest shows the band had played up to that point, Plasmacrash received mixed reviews from the audience.
As Rivet was returning from his tour in the Middle East, the band got the incredible news that not only had the Colorado Dark Arts Festival returned, but Plasmacrash was selected to play the show. The show had been a huge milestone for the band, and inspired them to strive to top themselves.
The band's perseverance paid off as they were given an opportunity to headline the Aggie Theatre in Fort Collins, Colorado. This would be an even more impressive performance than the 2008 Dark Arts Festival. This would also be the last show Kevin Lawless would play with Plasmacrash as like former drummer Jon, he decided industrial music was not his cup of tea.
Lawless was almost immediately replaced with Nic Bastard, bassist for Gunn's other band ALH. Bastard was an excellent fit for the band both in terms of sound and style. One of Bastard's first shows with the band was at bowling alley/ concert venue The Falcon, after which the band was approached by Kelly Baczkowski of Black Crown Entertainment.
2009 was a very eventful year for Plasmacrash, containing both significant highs and lows for the band. At the beginning of 2009, the band officially signed with Black Crown Entertainment. The band was also invited to return to the Anime Wasabi Festival. Wasabi 2009 was much kinder to Plasmacrash and almost all reviews were positive across the board. Plasmacrash also was given the opportunity to play with national act Babyland. The Babyland show gave the band a great deal of new exposure and was their first opportunity to perform with a National Act.
2009 was also the year Plasmacrash drummer Joey Gunn was diagnosed with degenerative colitis. Sadly, Gunn's medical condition rendered him unable to continue drumming for Plasmacrash without suffering significant bodily harm. During this time Plasmacrash was given the opportunity to perform with the biggest act they'd encountered yet, Slick Idiot. Due to Gunn being medically unable to play, and Plasmacrash being without a drummer, longtime friend of the band Pseudokiss Masochist temporarily filled the position. While performing with Slick Idiot was a dream come true for the band, the show was not without its pitfalls. The venue moved the show to another location without notifying anybody, including the performers. As a result, almost nobody showed up despite the high profile nature of the show.
2010 was also very significant part of Plasmacrash history. Due to differences regarding the direction and creative goals of the band, Plasmacrash did not renew their contract with Black Crown. The news at the beginning of the year was not all bad however, as Plasmacrash finally found their drummer. Army Band Sergeant and former BRD drummer Doodle was brought on and turned out to be an even more incredible blessing to the band than anticipated. The band was able to debut their strongest lineup yet at the 2010 FOCOMX music festival. The band played at Surfside 7, arguably the smallest venue at the festival, but they managed to fill the place to capacity and even had passersby standing in the doorway to listen. 2010 also saw the band starting to explore new geographic territory, playing some very successful shows at Union Station in Colorado Springs, and The Buffalo Rose in Golden, CO.
After the Buffalo Rose in 2010, Plasmacrash took a brief break from live performances to focus on administrative tasks within the band. The band returned to the stage towards the end of the year playing "Jack's Lament" from the film The Nightmare Before Christmas in a special show in which a different band hailing from Fort Collins took on a different song from the show.
Reenergized from the admin break and the Nightmare show, Plasmacrash came into 2011 swinging. Their first show of the New Year was at Deathwish, a monthly, themed Industrial night growing increasingly popular in Denver. The band then got to open for yet another national act, Roughhausen, a project of former Frontline Assembly guitarist Jeff Stoddard. Continuing the wave of high profile shows, the band returned to FoCoMX for 2011, this time playing at a larger venue, with Fort Collins hard hitters Immortal Dominion.
The band continues running strong and looks forward to even greater success as time passes.
